Hello...... I'm moving up and looking at Catalina 310. Any special things to ask or look at while scouting around? Thanks paulj Anacortes

No real issue with these boats..
I am actually selling my beautiful, every available option & loaded 2005 but unfortunately for you it's on the East coast. I have a 2005 310 and it has been an incredible boat. With a brand new boat I only had two warranty issue one a failed tachometer, which Catalina does not make but replaced quickly, and the other was a small 2 inch diameter deck void. Deck voids are common in all hand laid production boats and easily fixed by injecting epoxy into the void. We have a roller furling model and really love it. The boats sails well and is huge on space for 31 footer. We have had NO problems with this boat & I highly recommend it. We looked at the 320 and the 310 but liked the 310 because the 320 v-berth is very cramped and we HATE sleeping in an aft cabin. It might give you an example of what an asking price is on a fully loaded late model 310.

I assume your looking at used ones? No real issues with ours in seven years of ownership. Yes, small minor cosmetic fiberglass defects are not uncommon on Catalina sailboats. They kind of go with the affordable price. My voids, two or three, have been just under the gelcoat and about the size of a pea. Interesting that we also chose the C310 over the C320 for exactly the same reasons Maine Sailor said. The C310 has been pretty much what you see is what you get. No surprise design issues. No chronic defects with these boats that I am aware of. Useless navigator table, and fresh water tank on the smallish side. But this is just a case of, "it is what it is". I can't think of any real criticisms. I'm happy to answer any specific questions you may have. P.S. Maine Sailor, curious why you are selling. Moving up?

We're actually..
Moving down cost wise and putting money into a college account for our child. We are most likely going to buy a Nonsuch 30 (for about half the price of our 310) but I'll sure miss the furling main and the fact that this boat needs nothing in terms of maintenance. I enjoy boat projects so a mid eighties Nonsuc should give me plenty of them....

Rodd, Will miss your inputs on Catalina's
One question. Why do you have the Garmin plotter AND the Raymarine C Series Charplotter on your boat? Do you really need both?

I have both the Garmin and the Raymarine..
Mostly because I really think the C-80 is a crappy unit in regards to interface and setting up simple things like eta or getting tide info. I use the Garmin as my speed, time to dest, tide etc. etc. because the Raymarine requires far to many steps to make it easy to use. I will NOT be puting a Raymarine unit on my next boat and WILL be putting a Garmin on it now that Garmin makes an 18 inch 4kw dome. I've used Raymarine and Garmin units both for a very long time and find the Garmin stuff much more relible and easier to use. When you buy a Garmin you can just throw the manual away when you buy a Raymarine you need to get it laminated with waterproof pages so you can keep it in the cockpit, Don't worry guys I'll still be around here just not with a Catalina. Who knows it could take a while to sell, although, I'm guessing with her pristine condition, electronics, option package and priced the way she is it could be gone sooner than later..

Boats rarely make economic sense
My wife comes at me every so often to sell our boat, telling me it costs too much per month, and get this, she doesn't use it enough. Maybe she'd use it enough if the weather every day was 80 degrees with wind about 5 kts, and we had a live in dog sitter, and she could bring her comfy couch and TV. To be truthful, she does like to go out on multiday cruises once in a while. But she just doesn't see the point in going out for an impromptu dayail, or even a short overnighter. I generaly spend a few hours, 3 or 4 days a week, either cleaning or working on it, or taking it out on the lake for a couple of hours. I don't know what I would do without a boat. I was very sick 3 years ago, with a life threatening illness. It was likely that I would die within a few months. My wife suggested that we sell the boat because of all that we were going through. I told her that if the disease didnt kill me, selling the boat surely would!!!

FYI...PHRF is (I think)...Performance Handicap Rating Formula...they are used to rate time on distance, and time on time scoring in match racing. My PHRF is about 180, compared to my brother-in-law's C&C 99 which is about an 89. Of course, we didn't buy our 310 to race.

2004 HULL#249 EXCELLENT SAILBOAT. ALTHOUGH THE UNIVERSAL ENGINE RUNS ROUGH AT CERTAIN SPEEDS. HAD THE SHAFT ALIGNED LAST YEAR AND THIS HELPED. I HAD YANMAR IN PREVIOUS CAL AND S-2 BOATS AND NEVER EXPERIENCED THIS UN EVEN RUNNING. ASIDE FROM THAT A GREAT BOAT THAT I AM IN PROCESS OF SELLING TO PERSUE OTHER INTERESTS. NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO LEAVING BOATING!

Paul don't buy a 310 based on price alone.
You have to look at the whole package. Yes you can buy a poorly equiped 310 for 79k to 85k with no canvas, bimini, dodger, cockpit cushions, radar, auto pilot, plotter, depth, wind, speed and other electronics etc. etc. etc.. You also need to look at condition as well. I've seen plenty of 4 year old boats literally trashed. I bought mine new because I could not find a good condition 310 I would buy. If you're not racing I'd suggest seriously considering a furling main because it will hold it's value better than a traditional main. My dealer now sells 8 to 1 furling main boats to traditional and 5 to 1 wing keel over fin but that is locale dependant issue I'd guess your area is a fin area. I bought a wing strictly for re-sale in my area.
