Moving Main Sheets

I have a 1976 Hunter 27. A nice boat but it gets real crowded in the cockpit between the tiller and the main sheets. I am planning to move the sheet to the roof of the cabin. I know I need to reinforce the area but I have no idea how much reinforcement is needed or how much room is between the cabin ceiling and the deck over the cabin. Anyone have any ideas I would appreciate it.

George: Contact Harken. Their engineers will assist you with the installtion. Even if you end up with someone elses setup they can steer you in the right direction. They really do have some of the BEST traveler systems (but are not cheap)!

Need/want a traveller?

Most H27s that I have seen simply used a block on either side of the companion way. I think they are set up for 4:1 to mid-boom. You should be able to find a couple of examples in your marina. You could mount a traveller in the same general area. The price/performer seems to be Garhauer but I see their web-site is being reconstructed. Either way you will need to drill holes through the two inches of cabin top and bolt through to about twelve square inches of 3/8" stainless backing plate(each side). With some luck maybe the plates are already imbedded there. But you will need measurements from an H27 that has the blocks to find them. My experience comes from researching this idea for my own H37C. The traveller currently resides in front of the companionway on the bridgedeck. Many H37C owners have already done this.

Replacing Mainsheet Blocks on Cabin Roof

Dear Ed, Your response is interesting to me. I just received 3 new blocks from Schaeffer to replace the ones attached to the boom. Next month's budget will allow me to replace the cabin top fiddle beckets. Schaeffer says they include plastic mounting pads and backing plates are available if needed. The interior of my cabin has no backing plates, which is why I am interested in your expertise of Hunter construction. My question: since there are no backing plates visible inside the cabin roof , there must be pre-drilled 12" plates already in place? Am I correct in this assumption? Thank you for your reply. s/v "LOTUS"

No laughing out there.

I say that John because a lot of guys know how new I am to all of this. There are some very experienced H27 owners around, they must be sailing and staying away from the net. I envy them. Last night at our marina I checked out some H27s. I found every variety of mainsheeting. I saw the standard fiddles on the boom and cabin top. I saw tiller boats with the traveller at the back. I saw a wheel boat with the traveller in front of the wheel. And I saw a nicely made wooden arch over the companionway with a traveller bolted to that. No Hunter that I know of will have backing plates showing inside unless it is an owner modification. I have to think those little teak blocks that your fiddles attach to are bolted into an imbedded aluminum plate, maybe stainless. Surely one of the H27 guys can confirm this. If you do have to bolt through some owners just use very large washers. This is because the cored parts of your boat are very strong. And I believe those blocks attach near a raised area, like a splash coaming or something. This would make it even stronger. Let us know what you find.

Traveler hunter 27

I hate to disagree with the previous gentleman about the aluminum reinforced coach roof, But I do. I replaced the old type triangle with a traveler and found a very strong aluminum plate which I drilled thru and bolted my traveler with a couple of towers; this set up was so succesful that a friend of mine wanted to do the same thing on his boat, but health problems put a damper to this and I still have the set up. If you want any extra information either E mail me or call me and I'll be more than glad to discuss it with you. Ed Tamara S/V mastconfusion edtamara@aol.com 954 442 2089
