moving controls on C30

I am in the process of repairing fired damage to my 1978 C30 under the port storage area under the cockpit. During this I am considering replacing the controls and moving them up to the pedestal. I have searched the archives and found a few good suggestions. I believe i have an Edson pedestal, however the tag is worn off on the bottom and the only markings are on the steering wheel nut with an anchor symbol and letters around it. I beleive Edson makes a control retrofit for this pedestal. However I have an atomic 4 gas engine. I size of the shift cable is almost 3x's that of the throttle cable. I was told this is because there is no detent in reverse and the cable itself actually holds the transmission in reverse. All that being said is there anyone who was done this upgrade? Could you give me any advice. I have an e-mail into Edson but have not heard back. THANKS!

One idea...

JR, I'm not sure if you're trying to do it cheaply or if you're trying to do it the easy way. One suggestion might be to pull your entire pedistal from the boat & send it to Edson. They can recondition any parts that may need to be replaced & add the controls upgrade that you're looking for. It's not cheap, but you'll have a new system that's done right. I think for about $500 they'll replace or repair any parts that may be worn & repaint the entire thing. Again, it's not cheap, but your steering system will be like factory-new. Wheel nut

I seem to recall a similar question sometime ago referencing an anchor symbol. I don't believe it was Edson. You might find it in the archives. My 84 C30 has "Edson" on the wheel nut. I just tried to do a search but came up empty. Maybe someone else remembers the question and where to find it.

def. not an edson

Edson e-mailed me and told me that it was a "Yacht Specialties" helm. I'm trying to contact Catalian Direct to see if their retro fit kit will work with that model wheel.

Have you tried their website? Many others have done this before. Stu

quick question!!!

I have just a quick question for you, if you don't mind. My wife and I have been looking at some older Catalines with gas engines. Was the fire you had caused by the engine or related systems? I like the idea of a gas engine because of the maintance aspect. But the fire issue is a concern. I notice a lot of older gas boats around, so it seems that the fire issue is not all that bad. Thanks Tom K

gasC30?

Hi Tom Idont think that gas moters would be a problem in sail boats. If your boat dosent leek gas and you use your bilge blowers befor you start the moter ALL THE TIME.and there is all solid state elect parts(no sparks) in the bilge I feel that gas is safe.dsl moters will allways be safer with no vapers to deal with.As far as maintance on the small DSL moters there is none just oil and filters belts and raw water pump.just change the oil and filters ,check belts, water pump thats it .The guys that put my boat in the water told me that he never had a dsl in a sail boat not start in the spring.Ive seen some nice sail boats go cheep with gas moters .The boats are worth less with a gas moter and there could be a deal to be had.I do have a dsl and love it.my trucks are all dsl
