Hello all, Wondered if anyone out there might have some insight on boat transport. I'm on the west coast, southern California, and planning on buying a used Hunter 450 or 456. Wanted to see if anyone has a ball park idea on the cost to A: ship it on the road, or B: have a captain deliver one from Florida. Could I even ship a 450 from Florida via road? In addition to pulling it from the water and dropping the mast some have told me to put it on the road, I would have to remove the keel. I'm just trying to find out how much coast to add, if I expand my search for used boats to the east coast. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Peter

Check with H&S yacht Sales in Marina Del Rey. They are a Hunter dealer. They arrange for shipping and should be able to give you a ballpark quote over the phone. I bought my 450 through Steve Curran there 4 years ago and was absolutely impressed with his pre- AND post-sale care. I recommend him highly if you are looking for a broker. Jim

Peter, My boat went from annapolis to erie to west coast of FL to East Coast of FL to Atlanta, to New england to Annapolis. I almost put more miles on land. I agree the hunter dealer in the are of the vessel should be able to recommend a transporter. I believe once the vessel is on the truck - keels are not removed, but wrap everything and pad - keep it on the truck to your homeport. Your marine insurance carrier will need to give you an endorsement for coverage whilst the vessel is being transported. if you only delivered vessel to FL and hired a captain you would then inccur an additional insurance charge to cover the captain to deliver the vessel and your navigation may need to be increase beyond your local waters insueing in another additional charge. I believe trucking all the way will be the least overal coast. bob

A couple of things to consider. Several years ago I looked at a number of boats on the west coast. Many did not have A/C. If you're eventually going to FL you'll want A/C. These boats are transported all the time, but it costs money. Depending on how long it is before you're going to be in the East it may be better to put the money towards a newer boat or one with more stuff.

Just got quotes from several marine transport companies concerning shipping a 36 footer from Annapolis to San Diego. Cost's were running about 9500.00 Figure in an additional 2000.00 to de-rig pack and then re-rig the boat when it gets to it's destination.

Just got a quote from 2 boat transport companies to move a 37' Hunter from Chicago to San Francisco. One was $8800, the other $8900. At 2200 miles (give or take) that is $4 per mile. Plus yard charges at each end.
