Help! I was transferred to Nashville, and I am looking for recommendations for a good place, probably on Old Hickory Lake, to keep my 37 ft Hunter sailboat. I'm also trying to find a marina with a travellift where they will let me work on my boat. I visited Drakes Creek Marina, and was told that I could not do my own work on my boat; I would have to pay their service department for all work before launching. My boat is still sitting on land at North East, Md, and I'm hoping to get it down here soon.

Any reason you have to launch where you'll keep

the boat? Find any place with half a day's motoring on the river where you can launch and recommission it yourself...then take her to her new home in your marina of choice.

Nashville

Edward, As the old saying goes..."rots of ruck" on finding a slip for your boat. Most of the marinas around Nashville have waiting lists. I finally gave up and bought a 26X Mac which I keep on the trailer in a boat shed at one of the local mini-storage warehouses. Somewhat of a hastle but better than nothing. Percy Priest is the best sailing lake even though I spend most of my time on Old Hickory. Mostly because it's only 2 miles to the launch site. The best sailing lake is Kentucky Lake but that's about a 2 hour drive from Nashville. There is a place there called Lighthouse Landing. They are very nice and have a good marina with slips available. If I can be of help let me know via email to: dustoff287@yahoo.com and we'll go from there. What about Land betwen the Lakes

I must confess that I am still in the exploratory phase of sailing so my advice may not bew orth a ton, but have you looked at LBL? Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake are much bigger together than Percy Priest. There are what appear to be some nice marina/resorts at the north end of the lakes, about 2 hours from here: lighthouselanding.com and greenturtlebay.com. Granted that's further from home than Percy but it should be doable for weekends. From what I know of Percy, it's pretty well infested with redneck ski boats, too. Anyway, take this for what it's worth and let me know what you find out should you investigate these places. By the way, how do you like your Hunter, that's somewhere in the range of where I think we will end up when we buy? ppandjt@yahoo.com

Lakes Barkeley has no end.

Barkeley and Kentucky Lakes encircle the Land Between the Lakes Park, Kentucky Lake joins the Ohio and via lock on to ??? while south of Kentucky Lake is the whole Tennessee and Tenn-Tom waterway, all the way to Mobile and ???.

Ed, who is paying?

Is the company paying for the move? Do they know that you have an 18000# boat to move? That will be quite a site, an H37C plying the lakes of Tennessee! Good luck, neat place to live and work(our headquarters are in Nashville).

Big sailboats aren't unusual on inland lakes

Not all fresh water lakes smaller than the Great Lakes are puddles, ya know. :) At my YC alone on Lanier north of Atlanta, there were two Tartan 37s, an IP 38, a Catalina 41, and half a dozen more boat 35'+ I don't think there more than half dozen sailboats UNDER 30'. And we have a small marina..

Thanks for the ideas

Thanks for all the replys. Let me answer a few of the questions in the replys. Travellifts; I have only found 1 travellift in all of Old Hickory lake. This is because the boats are in the water all year round, and I was told that they get hauled aprox. once every 5 years. Moving cost; my employer is paying for the boat to be trucked, and it will be approx. $1700 for the 800 mile move. Travellifts and mast stepping not included. It would be more fun to sail down the east coast, around Florida, up the Mississippi, etc. to Nashville, but I would be unemployed by the time I got the boat moved... I will have to have another look at Kentucky lake, but I already miss the Chesapeake bay.

Kentucky Lake

I'm from Clarksville and keep my boat on Kentucky Lake. There are a lot of marinas on the northern end, but I think that the southern end is sort of a great secret! Our boat is at Paris Landing State Park, which is a nice, fairly new marina very close to the channel. There are quite a few avid sailors at our marina. Follow 79 out of Clarksville until you cross Kentucky Lake, the marina is on the right. There are quite a few boats from Nashville here. The lake is almost as big on this end as it is on the other, but would be closer to you. These lakes are very big for inland lakes -- it is about 40 miles from here to the north end. There is also plenty of sailing to the south, heading towards Pickwick, although the lake isn't as big. Barkley is more of a river on the southern part, and I'm told it has a lot of shallows on the northern end. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at swartm@earthlink.net!

Kentucky Lakes is GREAT!

We sail on a 25,000 acre Corps lake in Missouri. There are over 400 sailboats slipped on our lake, several over 40'. Lake sailing isn't going to be the equal of ocean sailing, but it can still get pretty exciting. AND, we don't have sharks. :-} Kentucky Lakes is a georgous area and sailing on that lake with the right wind will still be a challange. I read an article some months ago about one of the colleges (may have been UK) that has a sailing class. As part of the final exam, the class charters a Hunter 336 from KL marina and has a week long sailing and camping trip on KL. What a life?? Anyway, it was in the early spring and the weather turned bitter cold and was very windy. Those kids sailed in conditions on that lake I would never sail in. Anyway, a great lake and lots of beautiful scenery. Also, some years ago, MONEY magazine rated the KL lakes area as one of the top retirment choices in the US for reasonable costs and beautiful scenery. Regards, Wynn Ferrel S/V Tranquility
