Mounting underwater light

Bought one of the high end underwater lights for my hull

The housing is bullet proof 316 stainless looks like it is built well
Question is how would you prep and paint it ,same as bronze for the areas exposed to water?

What about on the interior would you just leave it bare stainless?

Hmm, not my cup of tea but bigger concern would be how you pan to mount and wire it. Is it recessed into the hull?

I would not paint it to protect from growth. You will need to dive it occasionally to clean the lens anyhow. Clean the SS at the same time.

If you have a cored hull, you will have to build a solid area to mount it into, not just drill a hole.
I would check with the manufacturer about the painting.

You might want to consider buying a motor boat. Those guys are pretty good at lighting up the bottom when they roar into the BVIs at 0600 on a Saturday morning from the Spanish Virgins.

I have NO clue why anyone with a sailboat would want to do that.

I would love to have one on the aft port quarter. They bring in the bait fish and that brings in the food fish and if you wanted fresh fish for a late supper; no problem! It would also be helpful if someone was trying to find the boat in a dark, full anchorage. But I wouldn't leave it on all night.

If it were me I would try to mount it in the end of a PVC pipe so it could be dangled in the water and removed when not in use. I think it will be more trouble than useful if it is anything like a swimming pool light. Our pool light has been a constant pain in the butt.

First Stu you must realize that my boat project is a mix of the admiral wanting to sail the rest of her life and myself being the diehard fisherman. So I told her she could have the best of sail as long as I could still catch supper

Anyway there are two two inch holes just forward of the keel one housed the transducer for depth and the other a paddle transducer for speed I figure the one housing the paddles is now a dino from the past so what do you do with this two inch hole in the hull? Thought about it for a long while went on the back burner and a few weeks ago while crusing e-bay I saw this light listed was going to install a spare airmar trans in the hole so but i thought why not,cost about the same as an airmar trans anyway Sooo bottom line is I thinks fishing accessories can and will have a place on my boat. Hope that helps STU!!!!

Have also constructed a diving compressor and thought this light could be quite the advantage

Back the the question. Being that stainless like O2 do you paint the inside or not?

Barriier coat and anti foul on the outside?

Here is the choice I went with. Half inch hole through bottom for wire and backed similar to a thru hull for mounting screws. I chose to wire both lights independent of each other because lights have 5 separate functions. Placement of the lights was a worry as to how well they would perform on a sailboat being that these are marketed as a transom light. They are easy to clean with a brush if needed and they work great. I could describe them as having an aquarium around the boat. They are great for clearer water such as Catalina. We love them as well as our dock neighbors.

Russ, thanks for the very explanative answer. Good luck. Don't paint stainless, no need to do so, inside. Outside? Bottom paint. I'd scratch it up some, if not a lot, to get the paint to adhere.
