Hi, everyone, I have purchased everything I need to install a single lever remote control on my Mercury 9.9 four stroke outboard for my 1997 H-26. I plan to mount it on the starboard coaming just forward of the sternrail seat. I know that the coaming is filled with a styrofoam-like material for floatation. Have any of you had experienced installing a remote control on the coaming? Was the foam material inside a problem for you? Also, at what point on the transom did you lead the control cables out of the hull? I don't want mess this up, so I would appreciate hearing from anyone else who has competed this installation, or one like it. Thanks. Don Barber S/V Third Degree

Why On Coaming?

Assuming you have a tiller on your '97, how are you going to easily steer the boat while reaching the controls if they are near the stern corner seats? My '95 H26 has a dealer-installed single lever motor control and electric start on the starboard side - placed on the vertical surface below the seat area. The access hole is then in the stern berth area, with easy leads to the battery and back to the motor thru another hole in the vertical fiberglass just below the stern seats. The only problem with this arrangement is that the lever is where you may want your feet in the cockpit, but it certainly gives you good access to operate both the tiller and motor controls at the same time without having to move. Overall, this arrangement has proven to work quite well and has not been much interference. If you have wheel steering, your plan may work well. Good luck.

Transom box

We mounted our remote controll for a Yamaha 8hp on the side of the port side of the transom box where you get past after boarding via the ladder. It work really well and dose not really intrude on space. We can operate the tiller with ease and controll the motor with your right hand whilst steering with your left. By the way the Yamaha has now done 28 hours and works just fine. Plenty of powere for getting around the jetties.

Mine Works Well

Don, I have a 1996 H26 and have mounted our single handle control on the rear of the starboard seat. It works terrific there. When motoring (or docking) I sit on the starboard seat and have my left hand on the control lever and my right on the tiller. It also can be maneuvered when seated in the starboard stern rail seat with your foot. All of the mechanical cables can be left outside the boat and the electrical cable let in inside the motor well. This entry point is behind the bulkhead in the aft berth. No foam in this area to deal with. I'll be sailing this weekend and take a couple of pictures for you and post them here. Good Luck!
