I am interested in mounting a radar array on my 1998 410. I have in mast furling main and furling jib and the fiberglass arch over cockpit. Questions: #1-Has anyone mounted the array on a gimbal off the rear of the arch? #2-Has anyone mounted the array on a gimballed stern post(which post manufacturer was used?) #3-I know the advantage of array height and mounting on the mast but is it worth the maintenance headaches?

410 radar

Our's was mounted on the mast during commissioning. So far, there has been no reason to go up there for a look. I think if you got fancy with gimbals you might regret it. John Richard s/v Jack's Place

should you decide to go with a pole is Garhauer. I also thought there was a gimbal mount through this site, but I couldn't find it. See the link to Garhauer.

We mounted the radar on a pole on the stern

We have a simillar boat, a Hunter 380. A friend has the same boat with the radar on the mast and has problems from time to time when tacking. Not a major problem but annoying nevertheless. I put the unit on an Edson pole (expensive) that is connected on the stern with a hinge and stabalized by connecting to the aft rail seat. It is an excellent pole (recommended by Practical Sailor) and is tall enough to give me good visability. The display hangs from my fibreglass arch right over the steering station. It is a perfect place for my wife and I. One thing that I would like to add to this discussion is that in the three years I've had radar, I rarely beyond one mile in my searching. I live in the San Juan Islands and I don't have a large open water to contend with. If I were to go to twelve miles, all I would get would be islands all around me. At the same time, I find that pleasure boats with radar reflectors and pleasure boats without radar refectors show up about the same. Ferries and tankers show up larger. Just a reflection on refectors.

radar on a 98 410

Jan I mounted a pole on the stern port side. I will look for a photo , right now the boat is covered up for the winter, in the water. It was a simple installation on the 410. regards KEN

Thanks to for all responses.

I appreciate the thoughtful comments and will be looking to use a stern mounted post (don't know which yet). Hope to see some other 410's this year on the NY/Long Island Sound waters.

Radar pole

I had the same feeling about mounting the radar. I designed a carbon fibre post, that placed the radar just above the arch, and boom, on the stb side. Also mounted on this pst are TV, navtex, and GPS. The finish is fantastic, but the diam of the post is slightly on the large side. Radar coverage is acceptable, asuming its purpose is avoidance, navigation at close range.....Ian.
