I am in the process of installing a Raytheon Pathfinder radar on my H28. I am interested if anyone has install a radome on the backstay. My boat has a split backstay. I have seen several in catalogs and on this website, but have not talked to anyone that has installed one on a backstay.... I am interested if the experience was a good one, or wish that you have installed it on the mast or on a post back aft. Would appreciate any insight/comments. Thanks

Have one on the backstay

We have the Waltz mount on our backstay on our Valiant 32. I'm very pleased with it. It's the cleanest way to mount a radar that I've found. However, I don't see how this would work with your split backstay. Maybe it would, but it would take some strength/finesse to get it mounted at an angle will keeping the self leveling axis fore & aft.

Im mounted on a split back stay

I mounted mine on a split back stay, and it works very well, even at a slight angle. You'll have to adjust your radar to compensate for the angle however!;or objects directly in front of you will appear to be along side of you!

Waltz Mount

I installed a Waltz self-leveling mount on my split backstay for my 40.5. It works well at any angle of heel, was easy* to install. *Easy= 3 people in about 2-3 hours to locate the base mount, rework the mount to conform to the curve of the transom mount area, drill, bed and mount the base plate, locate and drill the mounting hole in the support tube, drill the entrance cable hole and mount the packing gland, and finally mount the radome and shim it to be level. If you wish, email me and I will email you a photo of the installation. At about $700 for the 24" Raytheon backstay mount, it is one of the most reasonably-priced mounts. Rich
