If you have a wife, or are just a decorating kind of guy, you've probably tried to avoid drilling and tapping into your teak or fiberglass to hang stuff or mount gear. Most of you probably use heavy duty Velcro. You probably also tried mounting tape but found the foam core product awful to remove. I have found something different at my local ACE hardware. They have a large 3M product display and one of the items is called indoor-outdoor mounting tape. It is a grey tape with a red mylar cover over one side of the adhesive. If you have used the 'earthquake' strapping systems, it is the same stuff that's on the mounting pads. This stuff is solid, holds like nothing I have used before and is mosture resistant. Stuff isn't easy to remove, but it can be with effort. The tape just rolls off and leaves no residue. I have used it to mount some gear and found it to hold solidly. I have only found it at one location, so you may have to have them order it. You'll find yourself using more than you think, so get two rolls. Good luck, Rick D.

3M Command Adhesive

I have had pretty good luck with the 3M brand Command adhesive products. These are the ones with the pull tab for removing. They seem to hold really well and when you pull the tab, they let go. Gary

Mounting flexible bags or lockers

Rick: I'm eagerly following this thread as a new keelboat owner. At the risk of diverting the correspondence to heavier, more structural mounting applications, I'll add my story. I recently purchased some discontinued padded computer moniter bags that would I thought would make great sea lockers. Their size and shape is ideal for my kids to pack and lug around. The challenge is how to hang them without drilling. I have access to lightweight aluminum tube. There is one promising profile that is an inch and quarter wide and about 3/8 inch overall thickness. The edges are rounded and it's light enough that it could be slightly curved to follow the hull. I'm considering using that as a mounting plate, allowing very short screws to hold hooks. Fibreglass => Adhesive => Alum tube => SS foldback Hook => Bag Do you think that this 3M tape would be suitable for sticking aluminum to fibreglass? There's about an inch of flat aluminum contact area. I'm expecting 5 or 6 pounds of luggage per bag. One final wrinkle, we're on Lake Ontario, so freezing and thawing is a given!!! Many thanks Ralph K.

Ralph,too,many lb.s,but

There is a place on most boats that is at were deck and hull come together, that point can take a SS screw and hold well,be sure to use some sealer on SS screws so it dose not make a leak.

Dana May Be Right, Ralph

...but I'd try it first. The stuff holds remarkably well. Hey, Dana, That's a GREAT boat you have. I think the ideas incorporated into that design were original and innovative. Fast, too. Rick D.
