Mounting location for fluxgate compass in P27

I have a 1989 Pearson 27 and just purchased a Raymarine autohelm. My question is : Does anyone have a good suggestion for where to mount the fluxgate compass? It is usually mounted amidships and athwartships on a bulkhead. The P27 doesn't have any bulkheads near that location with the open salon layout. I thought I might make a bracket to mount it to the table post just above the sole, but don't know if it will like the large amount of metal in the post, even though it is not iron. Does anyone have an autohelm in this model boat? If so, where is your fluxgate mounted?
