Mounting engine on a sub-frame for accessories

I am installing a Volvo 2003T in a boat with a good solid bed, that was designed to take the rubber mounts that come with the Volvo, except that it requires a 3" spacer block on top of the bed. (this was originally done so that a larger engine could be fitted in future if desired, on the theory that blocking up is easy, but lowering an engine bed welded into the hull is a major job) I would like to make a sub-frame that would hold the engine, and extend about a foot forward of it. Freezer compressor and second alternator could be bolted to the sub frame, and thus held in alignment with the engine. The engine would bolt solidly to the sub-frame, and the sub-frame be mounted on rubber mounts bolted to the permanent engine bed. By doing so, I will move the rubber mounts a few inches from the location envisaged by the engine designer. Is this a problem? Should I use the Volvo mounts, or look for something else? If so, where?

Sub Frame

Dear Neil, Thank you for your letter. I have heard of people using a sub frame in supporting Genset systems before. I could not imagine what you are describing to be or create you a problem. I would think that I would use a rigid sub frame to the stringers and then use my rubber engine mounts to support the engine to the sub frame. This practice is used quite often in supporting thrust bearings, external V-drives and external transmissions. You will often see engine mounts being placed outside their original locations. Very seldom have I heard a mounting structure being completely compatible to another engine. Hope this helps. Kevin L. Woody
