Mounting deck hardware

Yet another stupid question... I need to install a deck organizer and rope clutch on the port side of the deck. The location prevents me from having access to underside in order to use bolts; this limits me to attaching with screws. Does anyone have any special reccomendations for doing this? Plan to drill pilot hole, use 3m sealant and mount hardware. The line that I am bringing to the cockpit is the reefing line, so there is not a great deal of stress.

I would not use a screw of any kind for attaching

hardware to the deck. Not sure what year your boat is but Hunter has for quite some time imbedded aluminum plates at strategic points that can be drilled and tapped for machine bolts. Try to examine other 26's to see where they have similar installations or check with Hunter regarding locations of these plates. Please do not use sheet metal screws or try to thread bolts into the glass.

Plates

The H26 is a 1995. Since I have a deck organizer and rope clutch on the starboard side, does it make sense to presume that the plates that you describe would be in the same location on both sides of the deck? Has anyone with a H26 installed deck hardware on the port side and located the plates that Clark describes Cam cleats for jib sheets are both screwed on with no backing.

You can find the metal plate ...

by using a magnet - such as stud finder easily available at a hardware store that has a magnet that finds nails in the sheet rock there fore finds the studs. I hope that helps. My reefing line attaches to a cleat on the mast. You can easily add a cleat on the mast using machine screws.

Your in luck

I added a deck organizer and rope clutch on the port side of my 1995 H26 to route double reefing lines to my cockpit. The aluminum plates are right where you would expect them. Go look and you'll see exactly where to mount them - same as the starboard side. However, I choose to through-bolt it with backing plates on the inside of my salon roof. I primed and painted the backing plates the same color of my salon roof.along with the hardware. I used plenty of epoxy filler in the holes, overdrilling, filling, and redrilling. Came out great. Not a recommendation, but…

There are aluminum plates there. I drilled but then used metal screws with 5200 as the bedding compound. Not sure why I didn’t drill and tap. That’s what I would do now. But, it has held for four years that way. Drilling and tapping is easy enough – especially in aluminum. Just make sure you use the correct drill size for the tap.

Plates are there

Drove to the boat today, and enjoyed a nice 4 hour sail in 10-12 mph wind and 60 degree temps, sunny skies. You're absolutely right, the port side mirrors the starboard with raised areas for the deck organizer and the rope clutch. Now knowing that there are aluminum plates underneath, I will drill and tap bolt holes to install the hardware. Thank you for providng me with this information! Paul

Additional Option

My 1994 H-26 has an access plate through the salon headliner inside the head. A previous owner bolted on a cleat above the access plate with stainless washers for backing. BrianW

Access plates

Thanks Brian. The only access plates on my boat are located just below the winches. I hate to cut into the headliner, so the aluminum plates provide a good solution.
