I recently purchased a Furuno Compact radar for my 2000 Hunter 290. Obviously, living in Idaho, I don't have a lot of resources for information. I wanted to know if the radar dome should be mounted on the mast, or are there other alternatives? If so, where can I purchase them. I would like to have the actual unit and the Garmin GPSMAP 162 in the cockpit. Is there a system or way of mounting them on the helm? Another question, we just got back from the San Juan Islands. I sailed with a friend who had a dodger on his boat. Does Hunter make a dodger for the 290/306 that will incorporate with my bimini? I appreciate any and all advice. Thank you, Mark Brown

Mark, We mounted our radar scanner to the mast on our 290. Will take some work to get the wire into the boat and ultimately back to the helm. We mounted our radar display at the nav station, but since it is a Raymarine unit, we have HSB radar display capability at the helm on the chartplotter. We mounted the chartplotter in a navpod at the front of the pedastal by removing the short stainless steel hand grip and installing one that is a little taller (12"). The newer 306's have a different pedastal, so your experience may vary. I'm not sure how you are going to find room to mount both the radar display and the seperate gps receiver unless the receiver/display you are describing is fairly small. I think you would be ahead to have the dodger built locally by a reputable firm. If you already have the bimini you could take off the forward section (ahead of the arch) and have a fly built to go from the back of the dodger to the arch. We did this on our 356 and like it. Provides for a bimini to the rear of the arch, and we put the fly on when we want a little more shade at anchor or just when hanging out. Dan Jonas (S/V Feije II)
