Someone was asking about where to mount a compass, and had some concerns about placing it on the bulkhead, not just because of the large hole that has to be cut, but a few of the First Mates love to lean against the bulkhead without having the compass in the way. My friend Wayne solved this problem by using 1/2 inch Star-board, a few screws, and a pin for removing the compass. He has the gimbaled compass mounted on top of his companionway sliding hatch. One might ask why he made the compass removable. It has more to to with mast raising/lowering than theft of the compass. Wayne claims that it gets in the way of the mast. We slid the hatch cover forward, and I was still able to view the compass while sitting at the helm. Of course, provisions would have to be made if someone needed power for a lighted compass, but I thought it was a pretty good place to mount a compass because it's in a place where it's easy to see, and most important of all, it's in an area with no magnetic influences that could cause compass deviation. This to me,-- would be a big factor in where I placed my compass. Joe
