Boom Vang
Your boom vang should be mounted as low as possible on the mast, preferably on the Mast Step Plate, and the top should be 45 degrees from the bottom tiepoint. For example, mine is set 30" below the bottom edge of the boom and 30" out from the mast. You can have the control line coming down from the top or back from the mast. I've seen both ways. I prefer to pull back from the mast, but whatever works works. Rigging the line will be interesting, depending on the type of pulley system you received. Some have sheaves that are side-by-side while others are set end-on-end. Harken's website (www.harken.com) used to have drawings showing how to rig some of those, and a lot of other applications. Try it. Hope someone else can give you a definite answer on how to set a boom vang for optimum efficiency. I've seen different & contradictory settings. It sorta depends on sailing style. If you're cruising, set it snug when going downwind so the boom isn't pulled upward as it swings out. In higher winds 15-18 upwind, you want it snug or tight to flatten the main for better control. In light-moderate upwind conditions, I think it should be loose (along with a loose cunningham) to let the main fill out. I think the C-22 NSA site has an article which tells how you're supposed to set the 'vang under different wind conditions. I've seen one somewhere. Maybe it was Harken. Good luck.
