I have an 8 HP outboard on my M-26 and can motor at about 6.5 mph with a full ballast tank in flat seas. I would like to increase this to about 10 mph by adding a larger motor or motoring with the ballast tank empty. Is this realistic?
With a displacement hull (which the 26S is a semi displacement hull) the boat will max out at about 6.5 knots. Beyond that it will try to sail right into it's own bow wave and bury the bow into the water.
Read your owner's manual! You certainly will go faster with an empty water tank and a larger motor, but read the manual for any CAUTION notes regarding power operation.
Right on. Technically you can go faster than hull speed but you will have to climb out of the bow wave you create and this takes mucho horsepower, more than what the 26D or 26S is rated to handle.
