Motor size

Does anyone use a 10 hp motor on their 216? Any problems with weight balance?My 3.5 hp 2 stroke quit off of long beach harbor last weekend so we sailed to a slip. The motor on my fishing skiff is a 9.9 Mercury 4 stroke, about 85 lbs plus gas. I haven't tried it yet. Thought i would ask for opinions on how much it would affect sailing. It sure looks big anyway.

I addded 35 gallons of h20 storage starboard to balance the motor and battery on my 23

Sounds like a bit of weight...

to me I have a 6hp 4 stroke murcery on my h23 and it still off sets if a little. I would recommend a 6 or less my 6hp murcery is only 50 some lbs 58 maybe you'd be suprised how much 20 lbs weight makes a diff.-JeffH23

9.9 hp outboard on an H216

I run a Nissan 9.9 hp 2-stroke outboard on my H216. I balance the weight by carrying the gas in the cuddy. I lengthened the gas line so I can simply run it from the gas can, lay it on the cockpit floor, and connect it to the motor. I deploy the gas line when I want to motor and stow it back in the cuddy when under sail. Seems to be just fine. Unable to plane under power unfortunately. Hunter told me privately that you can mount up to a 25 hp motor so the motor mount can easily handle the 9.9.I would prefer a lighter, lesser powerful 4-stroke but when I compare the price of buying one of these versus the price of my Nissan (free and in almost new condition from my brother-in-law!), I can't justify the expenditure.

Overloaded stern

Thanks. I'm thinking of putting both anchors, my tools and a deep cycle battery (for nav lights and 25 watt radio) in the bow storage compartment to offset the weight, will move the gas up there too (good idea) if necessary to keep the stern rubline at water level. Any thing else you would do to save a boat buck on a new motor? I'm going to get a cruiser instead of a daysailer, but then a dream is to go out to the channel islands or catalina in good weather, 10-20 miles out.
