WHAT IS THE BIGGEST MOTOR WE CAN PUT ON OUR HUNTER 260? WE CURRENTLY HAVE AN 8HP MARINER AND WOULD LIKE TO LOOK INTO SOMETHING BIGGER BUT DIDN'T KNOW HOW BIG WE COULD GO.

I beleave the largest recommended is 10 HP. I have a 9.8 HP 2-cycle and it seems to move the boat along nicely ( almost hull speed, slack tide and no wind). The 2 cycle lets me lay the motor down in any position without leaking oil I remove it for trailering because I have already replaced the motor mounts with heaver ones and don't want to do that again. My understanding is that 4-cycles are heaver but the wieght difference between 10 HP and even 15 HP isn't that great, but that you can't lay the engine down on its either side because of the oil pan leaking or oil getting into the heads. Hope this helps. Baums Rush 1999 Hunter 260

9.9

A 26-foot sloop can't go any faster than what a 9.9 will provide, with the exception of a catamaran or a McGregor, which you don't have.

No need to go big

I now have two Yamaha 8hp 4 stroke motors with power lift. They provide, on both yachts one of which a 260, more than enough power.

Maybe You Do Not Need a New Motor

But need a different prop.

You may have the answer Rick

For the prop on these Yamaha outboards are quite large.
