I have recently bought a 1972 ODay 22, fixed keel and I'm loving it. But, it came with a 6HP Johnson outboard standard shaft. This won't work on the Bay and the Sacramento Delta. We tend to do a decent about of motoring. So I'am looking to buy a longshaft motor, but I'm wondering about HP. I've heard that the boat will only go so fast, no matter how much HP you got. Plus there's the weight thing. I'm interested in what your using and how you like it. Performance info would be helpfull. Thanks.

Longshaft 9.9

This is the max you want, may be even too heavy. Honda makes an 8 I think w/generator... My 22 has an old evinrude 8.

According to O'day....

the maximum recommended HP (longshaft model) for the 22 is 15. This is from the O'day spec sheet/brochure for the 22. Check out the link on this site for "O'day Manuals", and select "specs/diagrams". The 22 diagram is actually for the later keel/centerboard model, not the stub keel version you have; however, I don't think the weight and hull shape changed much at all between the models. That being said, I have an electric start Evinrude 9.9 on my 23, and it is a pretty heavy beast. However, since I don't race, I can't see how a lighter engine would make any difference to me, except when installing or removing the engine. When properly adjusted, I think it pushes the boat at hull speed (as fast as she can possibly go). I have had very experienced skippers on my boat who have told me that the engine is bigger than necessary. However, both my wife and I really like the electric start feature, and are willing to have a slightly less efficient set up in order to keep it. I think the smallest engine anyone makes with an electric start is the 9.9. If you don't feel the same, then you could definitely make do with a 6. all other things being equal, I would go with the biggest engine you feel comfortable with. You don't need the power moving in and out of your slip, but you will be happy you have it available when you are punching through a nasty chop with the wind and current against you. Remember, there is no standard definition of "long shaft" so shop around; the longer the shaft, the better it is for a sailboat. By the way, if you are thinking of buying a four stroke outboard, make sure that your outboard bracket is specifically made to handle it. 4 strokes generate much more torque per horsepower than their two stroke equivalent and need specially made mounts to handle the loads. It is not just a question of engine weight. If the mount on your '72 is original equipment, it cannot handle a four stroke. In fact, most new brackets are not made to accomodate a four stroke. Those that are should be clearly advertised or marked as four stroke ready. Four strokes will deliver more power at a lower horsepower rating, are much cleaner and quieter, and do not require mixing oil with the fuel. However, they are more expensive to buy, and weigh a lot more than two strokes.

Evinrude 6HP longshaft is perfect!

I have a 6HP Evinrude longshaft which works well on my Oday 22. I'm able to do almost 5 knots into the wind w/ some chop. The 6hp is light enough not to effect the "balance" of the boat. Good luck!

Four Strokes

Cap'n Ron, You are talking about hullspeed basically. It's the maximum effective speed that the boat can move at because of drag from the keel, the hull, the rudder, everything you have in the water. I think its rated at like seven mph for the 22, same boat I have. A speed boat on the other hand is able to get up on plane, which is basically skipping across the water and thats why they are able to move at much higher speeds. You have heard right, that your boat can only move at a maximum effective speed no matter how much power you put behind the boat. What you might not have heard is that you can go slower, especially when something else is effecting your boat, like the wind or waves. Basically, more HP allows you to go at hull speed in heavier weather. Honda's 8 and 9.9's both have charging systems and electric starts on the four strokes, and they come in an EXTRA long shaft. Both are 108 lbs. for the extra long shafts. They are basically the same engine, just diffrent HP ratings. At nearly 110 lbs. they aren't light, but not too heavy. You should only really don't need to remove the engine all that much, so it shouldn't be that big of a deal. Eventually this is what I'll upgrade to. The comments on Torque are probably true, but I question the validity of torque's effect on a vehicle in a liquid medium. You also have to take into account the type and pitch of the prop, which has a much bigger effect on torque then the type of engine. I'm more inclined to think that the reason companies make 4 stroke specific mounting brackets is the physical weight of the engine. Motor mount brackets should be rated by weight as well as HP... Well before I start running on another tangent, let me just state that if you decide to change to motor mount as suggested, you should also brace the motormount at the same time. Check the related link for a picture of what someone else has done to this effect. Heres the quote from the webpage I found it on, 'Behind the 9.9 Evinrude, I added marine plywood, two part epoxy, an aluminum plate, and 2- 2x4 braces to the inside of the transom. I added that same plywood behind the gudgeons (the brackets that hold the rudder to the transom) and the steps. Seagull Silver Century 5 HP

Most modern "sailboat" outboards are high revving machines, originally designed to fulfill their primary market role... pushing small planing hulls, such as skiffs and Zodiacs. Then a higher pitch prop is added, and it "becomes" a sailboat, or displacement hull, motor. Seagull outboards were designed from the ore up to be displacement engines. Torquey, low-revving, efficient and light. My 5HP long shaft Seagull is light enough to carry with one hand from the car, yet at only 3/4 throttle, it pushes our O22 at hull speed. Chop, wind, and so on, it hasn't been a problem yet. Seagulls are a bit noisy, though, and you would have to find a used one... I don't think they are made anymore. Rich, Oyster, 1973 O22.

I've had my "22" for 29 years. I have had all the following outboards: Johnson 3 HP light weight adquate power Volvo 9.9 HP light weight, can't get parts! Sea Gull 5 HP messy (10:1 gas/oil) no reverse Evinrude 6 HP perfect! All are long shaft. You want the lightest motor, this will rule out the current selection of four strokes. The Evinrude/Johnson 6 HP (two stroke)fills the bill. Good Luck! Warren

Horse Power

A 15 horsepower motor for a 22 is grossly overpowered!!! An 8 horse was perfect for my 25 Catalina. Consider that my 35 foot O'Day only has a 21 horsepower universal deisel. Two stroke engines want to operate at high RPMs where their maximum power is, at slow RPMs they don't run as efficiently. A 15 horse two stroke on a 22 will run at very slow RPM's and will foul the plugs and accumulate carbon deposits from poor combustion. You should not use anything bigger than an 8 and a 6 should be fine, I even bet my 4 horse dinghy motor will push you at hull speed. Regards, Dave

Post 1980 Seagulls are actually 25:1 gas/oil

Warren... the post 1980, "blue tank" Seagulls are actually 25:1 gas/oil mixture. The mixture you quote is for the "black tank", pre-80 models... I would imagine those were quite smoky! Mine runs very nice and clean. Rich.
