I am thinking of adding a raw water anchor washdown, to my CM 440 and would appreciate any feed back for how big of a motor I need, to do a good job? Thanks, in advance, for your suggestions.

2 Horse power should do it. ;D

Mostly it will depend on how much power you have to draw on. but 20 amps at 12 volts would be about a third hp.

Andy, let me tell you

don't do it! I have a saltwater wash down and NEVER use it. I have to winterize it every year (not sure why the anti-freeze is stillin there). Why would you want to spray salt water on your boat? Just want until to get back to port and rinse off with fresh water! It is MUCH BETTER for the boat! How muddy can you anchor be. I shake it off in the water before I pull it up. I am not sure on the size but it has to be big enough to pump up about 5 feet of head to get to the deck. Mine is pretty big.

What I do

Andy, here in Lousiana, we have plenty of gooey mud bottom. I don't have a windlass, and what I do when pulling up the anchor, is cleat it off when near vertical, then use the engine to break it out. Then I just motor a little way and it washes 95% of the crud off the anchor, keeping the deck and anchor locker much cleaner.

If you sail in salt water you get salt spray on your boat Jim.

The water hose at your house operates on about 50 psi and about 5 gallons per minute. That works out to about an 1/8 HP, so a 1/3 HPpump should give the volume and pressure you neer to wash the mud away. Jim , Why would you use nice clean drinkable water for wash salt mud back into the harbor?

70 psi pressure

I got the AQUA JET wash down system right here on the forum. While anchoring out in a cove in NY I used my windless to pull up anchor and move to a new location, well I could not believe how much mud came up all over the chain and anchor. The chain was so packed with mud that I had a real mess all over me and anchor locker and boat. When I got back to dock it took me an hour to clean everything. I am installing the wash down system to make things easy keeping the boat clean,I don't think salt water which does get sprayed when sailing will hurt until we get back to giving it a fresh water washing,I give the boat a good waxing so it is easy washing off the salt water. I am going to add two outlets one in the anchor locker and also at the stern for washing off the dinghy and other boating equipment. Get a wash system with the most pressure when shoping. Nick

Ross, your right

I am wasting water. Too bad I don't pay the water bill! All salt water boaters do it Ross! We have to get you out of that bay or at less south enough to pick up some nice air and salt water. We'll put that book learning to good use! You want to crew up to New England this summer or maybe join us with your boat?

I bought a washdown system

from this web site and it was a great deal! I can't wait to use it cause I anchor in some pretty muddy bottoms and with 40 ft of chain you can't get the mud off till you get back to the dock and by then the anchor locker is a muddy stinken mess :( , I leave the anchor hanging in the water while I motor away to wash it off so my new system should be able to clean the chain while its on the way up (I gotta teach the wife how to do this)
