My new (used - 2006) day sailer has a motor mount, and I was going to buy a Yamaha 2.5 HP 15" shaft, 4 stroke, but not sure if I should get a longer shaft, or more HP. Anyone have any experience to advise me?

I'd recommend a Honda 2HP. They're lighter and air cooled. More than enough for a H140. I have one for my H15(H146) and many have the same for H170's. As you will be sitting at the stern the short shaft should be OK and will also allow you to use it in shallow water.
Cheers

I believe the 2.5 replaced the 2, and is still air cooled. I was looking at the 2.5 while at the Defender sale a couple weeks ago, didn't look or feel much different than my 2hp, but may be enough extra power to make my inflatable plane wish just me in it... sadly I will never know since my 2hp runs fine, and won't be replaced anytime soon.

I think it is now rated ar 2.3 hp but with no increase in engine cc's. Those new ones were coming with a 5 year extended warranty.

The one I have is a low hour 2nd hand one that that I got for 50% of the new price. Starts on first pull and seems very reliable. The reason I bought the Honda was the air cooled engine. Previously owned small outboards always came to grief when they sucked in stuff and the water pump died.

I look on the Honda 2 as the VW Beatle of small OB's
