MOTOR SHAFT PROP ALIGNEMENT

I need to re align my motor and propeller shaft, I have recently replaced my cutlass bearing and the installer suggested that I align my motor because of uneven wear of the bearing

Here's how

Take apart the coupling of the shaft to the engine and use "spacers" to get within 3 one-thousands of an inch by Yanmar specs. My shop does it 1 one-thousand. To get the spacing perfect, adjust whichever of the four motor mounts to push the appropriate corner of the engine up. This is the theory. In practice, let the yard do it since it's their speciality.

center the shaft and block it first!

You will need to center the shaft in the log first. Do this by feel. Locate the center by moving the shaft up and down and side to side. them make a block with a v in it and wedge the block under the staft to hold it in place. then align the motor to the shaft. its important to move the engine until the cupling untill the clearance in even on all sides. You will need to move the shaft back and inch or so each time to clear the cupling when you adjust. It is usually a time consuming pain in the butt.Oh do this in the water Not on the hard. the boat will change shape as it is properly supported.Get a feeler gage with from an auto parts store or wallmart. or in a pinch it can be done with a new dollar bill. The up and down adjustment is with the bolts on the mount. the side to side adjustment is done buy shifting the mount in or out. Good luck.

yard did mine

was less then $100. Worth the price for the time and aggrivatin it would have been for me to do it and I know it is done correctly ! Wait until the boat is in the water and the hull has "reshaped"(a day or two) before doing the engine alignment.

Hello Bill,My opinion is if you have not done one before, start with a freind that has. It can become very confussing and a mess if by off chance you move to many things at once. Rubbics cube item.Kevin
