I am buying a new C-22 Mark II and I was wondering what motor you C-22 owners would recommend. I've read good things about Honds's, the boat dealer is recommending a Yamaha. I am also wondering what HP you guys would recommend, and if the alternator is worth the extra money. Thanks- John

I have a Nissan 9.9 with the long shaft on mine. It has performed great even in heavy conditions.

Just an opinion

Ahoy John, I had a Cat 22 -- had a Suzuki 6hp, two stroke. Worked fine. Actually, the Suzuki was about the best starting and running OB that I've ever had, but this isn't a commercial. I do see still some folks with 8 and 9 HP engines on 22s. Overkill in my opinion. And it sounds like you might be thinking four stroke? An 8 or 9 HP four stroke is really too big in my opinion, but I see people doing it. Just have someone ride on the bow I guess to counter act the weight of the motor. The alternator? Really depends how much you run the engine. If you are just putt-putting in and out of the marina, the alternator may not do you as much good, as say, a 10 watt solar panel. Good luck, Brad

Engine for C-22

John; If you're on a smallish lake, a four or five horse 2-stroke would be OK, but if you're in the ocean, you will need an eight-ten HP engine sooner or later. For economy and quiet, the 4-stroke is best, regardless of weight and besides, many alpine lakes have banned 2-strokes anyway. To spend more than one night aboard, you need a way to replenish the battery; solar or alternator.
