Oday 16`9" Hammond bay
My children have just purchased a 1964 Oday sailboat, day sailer I , for my birthday.

This is exciting! I will sail this boat in Lake Huron, western side, near Rogers City MI. I would like some recommendations on the best motor to purchase for this boat and what type of motor mount should I mount to the back of the boat.

Well, first, you should not need any motor mount, the DS I had a "kicker-pit" molded into the aft deck (it loocks like a small cooler to some!) allowing one to simply clamp the outboard right onto the transom. I'l linclude a pic below.
As to size, I use a 4hp Johnson (long-shaft) on my DS II and it works fine. 2-3hp is about right, over 5hp is too much usually, I bought the 4 due to the features that I wanted not being offered on smaller motors at the time (F/N shift, long-shaft, remote tank option, vibration damping). A long-shaft (20") is recommended, but a short-shaft will usually work, however the prop may be lifted close to the water's surface or out in waves (or large wakes from piowerboats). I did use a short-shaft (15") for the first 4 years that I had my Day Sailer, even on Buzzards Bay (near Cape Cod) it worked OK, but the long-shaft is a lot better!
Some owners use an electric outboard and those can work out OK as long as you have a way to keep the battery charged between uses and don't mind carrying the weight of a Deep-Cycle 12V battery (often 50-60# +). One great option (except for cost!!) is the new TORQUEEDO electric outboards, they incorporate a Lithium-Manganese high-performance battery, weigh around 27# all up (Including the battery!) and supply about 2 hours of power per charge. The downside is their $1600.00+ price!

You can also consider the new Lehr propane outboards, but I think the 2.5hp is only offered in short shaft version.

I use a 2hp Suzuki 2 stroke on my 15' Whaler Harpoon, and it does well. My O'day 192 has a 5hp 4 stroke Nissan, and I like the idea of not having to mix oil in the gas as with the 2 stroke, but I've only had a handful of outings on the 192 so far. The idea of the propane Lehr is intriguing, and I think it might be ideal as far as power and ease of fuel on a sailboat. There is a guy on the trailersailers.com forum who has converted a 4 stroke gasoline motor to propane, and he loves it.

You can buy a 3.5 Tohatsu with a neutral and long shaft delivered to you door from the Foldaboat people on the west coast for about $900. This will be more than enough for your boat in most any weather. Also its a 4 cycle and requires no gas mixing.

I have a Nissan 3.5 hp, standard shaft on my DS II. The motor clamps directly to the transom. 3.5 hp is more than adaquate but I would recommend the long shaft version.
