Motor on or off the boat when trailering?

Hi folks, for those of you that trailer, if you have a 9.9HP or similar, do you let it ride on the mount, or take it off?
And if you take it off, where does it go?
And does anyone have the remote throttle which would make you have to diconnect the cables if it is taken off?

We have a 5 HP motor. I prefer to carry it in the truck, or lying down in the cockpit. It just seems to me that on the mount it's going to get bounced up and down more.

I'm probably too paranoid about this; most other owners i know have left their motor on the transom mount without incident.

depends on how far you are traveling. for a short distance of a couple miles i may leave it on but beyond that i take my 5 hp 4 stroke off as i don't like the weight bouncing on the transom. the oday transoms are not like a power boat with 2 inches of marine plywood. they are thin walled fiberglass with a little reinforcement at the motor mount.

It depends on personnal preference. It has been my observatrion that the stress placed on the mount and transom support plate from an outboard at sea is much greater than that of trailer suspension bounce on paved roads.

Off and in the bed. land lubbers make me crank the brakes, change lanes suddenly, they like to get right on the back of my boat. I put it laying down on it's side in the bed of the truck.

I leave mine on the mount but I also run a cargo strap behind it and pull it up snug so it can't bounce around. I partly do that because I don't like lifting it onto the mount from a ladder more than I have to and partly because it slides around a lot on the bedliner in the truck.

I'm with sinnettc. I have a roller support that sort of clips onto the stern rail but sits on the gas locker (lazarette?). This supports the mast. So I run a line under the the back of the motor and over the mast. Snug is up to take any shock off the motor. I trailor about 30 miles, up the highway with no worries.

Yup. Fin keel on a trailer - Even with the mount pulled down to its lowest setting it's higher than I can bench press onto the mount.
