I've recently purchased a 15hp Honda o/b for my 1978 Cat 27, which origionally had a 15hp Johnson o/b. What I've found is that the Honda is to big to be tilted into the engine well. Has anyone had any experience with putting a adjustable motor mount on the transom? I've seen it done on a simular boat but I don't know any details. Thanks Ben

Possible Help?

Have a look at the International 27Webpage:www.Catalina27.org/ic27a.htm. Look at the Catalina Resources Section and then the projects page. There is a section for reconstructing the engine box for a four stroke, it possibly could be modified for your needs. I hope it helps!

Enlarge the Opening

My needs are similar. Presently I have to remove the cowling to tilt up my 9.9 Tohatsu. A snug, fitted canvas cover protects the motor. This seems to offer good protection in the marina, but it's a hassle not being able to tilt it up easily while sailing. The project article Sean mentioned is helpful, but before I cut into the boat, I'd like to hear from others who have made this modification. Especially boats equipped with single backstays. By the way, why such a large motor? Catalina recommends 6 to 10 HP.

An option

I installed a 15HP Mercury two-stroke. Just a bit bigger than the compartment would allow. BTW, I bought that size motor so I could tow my dinghy at hull speed, and it is the same motor as a 9.9. Anyway, I cut about an 1.5 inches off the bottom of the opening to allow the motor to tilt up. A lot less work than the modifications on the Catalina website. Of course, my two-stroke may be a bit smaller than the Honda.
