I bought a 2000 15hp. merc long shaft and it seam short only @ 8in in the water Iam sure it will be out of the water in 3ft seas. The boat is a 23 oday and the mount is stock any ideas how to lower the motor?

lower the mount

I had a 27 O'day with a 10 hp four stroke Honda (short shaft) that was heavy. The mount was an adjustable one, that allowed the motor to clear the water and be lowered and raised with very little effort. It sounds as though you have a fixed mount??? If that is the case then you can either re-attach it (lower) OR purchase a swing (spring loaded) mount...Good luck.

Here's what I did when I had an o23.

First, I shaved about an inch of the top of the wood mount that the motor clamps onto. This still left enough wood for the clamps to hold on. Then, I took the mount off and dropped it down so the top off the mount holes went into the bottom holes on the boat. Drilled new holes for the bottom of the mount. Filled the old holes with marine tex. The old holes didn't show with the motor in front of them. The end result was the motor just did skim the water when the mount was up and the motor tilted and the boat heeled to 15 degrees.

Put an Extension on the Motor

I have not seen one but am told there are extension kits available.

Heavy O/B Motor

I hate to disagree...but a 15 HP motor is too heavy for your boat..you could have some real serious problems. Sell the "15" and look for a 6-8 HP two-stroke in the 55-65 lbs. range. OMC has a 6 & 8 that would fit the bill. Also, make sure you get a "long" shaft. Good Luck!
