Motor Mount

I have purchased a Mercury 9.9 ELH (25" long shaft) and need to purchase a new motor mount. I am looking at the Garelick 71091 and wonder if anyone uses this combination that could offer some advice?

My concerns are ease of raising/lowering and if the motor can be tilted out of the water without any problems.

Any input would be appreciated.

Garelick brackets are supposed to be good, but they're kind of pricey. Rudy at D&R Marine sells a bracket that is very heavy duty for cheaper money. According to Rudy, some guys who own O'Day 25's have been using these brackets with 4 stroke engines of this size with no problems. I would be a little more concerned with backing up the inside transom with plywood for more reinforcement. The torque of these engines can be more detrimental than the weight of the engine itself. I like a bracket that I never have to touch. I've been able to tilt my 1999 8 HP Johnson 2 stroke long shaft with no problem on my standard engine bracket. One thing that you may want to find out is; whether the bracket will fit on your existing block on your transom. I think that Rudy claims that these brackets will fit the blocks on the O'Day 25's. I've got an older OMC bracket on mine now. It was on there when I bought the boat last fall. It's made of cast aluminum and looks heavy enough but I can't find any specs on it.

I've been looking at the Garelicks too.Doesn't seem to be much else available. Your Merc must be at least a hundred pounds. That's a lot of weight hanging out there. I think I would spend the money just for the peace of mind.

A good heavy duty bracket for heavy 4 stroke engines is a must, but if your transom isn't beefed up, that heavy duty bracket isn't going to do you any good. One of the guys on the forum a couple of weeks ago, showed pictures of his O'Day 25 transom stove in. He was using a light duty bracket which oddly enough, sustained no damage at all, but the torque of his 4 stroke engine which must have accidentally accelerated too high in forward gear, pushed the bracket and block right into the transom leaving a hole in the transom. Thank God the hole was above the waterline. It's really something to think about.

My older Mariner has the well cutout on the port side that allowed me to eliminate the drop down transom completely when I installed my new Yamaha 4 stroke long shaft. The well just had enough room to fit the engine clamping bracket and still allowed for full tilt. I beefed up the transom with another 1" of plywood. The only other modification I made was to glass in a small wedge that makes the aft edge of the well perpendicular to my water line so my outboard sits level with no shims.

Having a set up like that is a real money saver and the best of both worlds. I'm going to try to keep my 2 stroke going for as long as I can so I won't have to go through the task of changing my wedge and motor bracket.

I used to hate watching my outboard motor swimming back and forth on it's old mount. It just can't be efficent running like that and it is really hard on the transom. My new set up is ideal and I feel more confident now when the weather will blow up on me. The motor and boat are now one unit, solid and reliable!
