Hi all-

I bought a 28' O'day this summer and found out recently that motor mount pads/stringers are cracked so the motor will have to come out and stringers replaced and reglassed.

Has anyone had this job done or have this problem?

Thanks,

Steve

I am sure someone has. I have installed engines from new and made custom motor bearers, so it can be done.

Surprised no one has seen this on their boat! Just looking for an idea as to who can do this, how much it might cost, and how long it would take?

Thanks,

Steve

Hi all-

If you recently bought the boat with that problem, I would think that you have a major legal/financial issue with your surveyor.
That's a job that will take some fairly serious labor, yours or someone else's ($).

OTOH, if you source a manual from http://www.gougeon.com/
and read up on laminating, you'll find that it's quite do-able for a patient amateur.

Good luck!

Sidebar: that model has a decent sailing rep and yet has good cruising accomodations. There's one in our YC that goes out for a week at a time with a younger couple and two young and very active children.

FastOlson,

Thanks for the info on Gougeon Bros. I had no idea that they were behind West System Products. I'm sure I could tackle the job if I had the time but won't be able to work on it til the weather improves and that might be close to when I want to put boat back in the water. Also, I would need someone to align motor and coupling for sure.

I bought this boat without having it surveyed which I know is a no no but fortunately the price was such that I could have some work done and still be ok.

I sailed her back from cape cod to LI Sound (about 100 mi) and she sailed great. I just need to get her thru a few rough issues.

Is the motor a universal 5411? This little diesel is the one I had to replace in my 82 28. I used the crane at the marina to pull it out, but when we put it back in I had the crane set it in the salon until I had everything ready, and me and a friend just picked it up and shoved it back in there. It really wasn't too bad to move. So if you need to work on the stringers just take a bunch of pictures, disconnect everything, hook a winch to the boom and winch her up, push the motor forward and set it down. Should give you plenty of room to work in the engine compartment. I have some pictures posted of when I replaced mine on this site.
