Am considering a 9.9 outboard for my H-23. Has anyone installed a 9.9 on the fiberglass molded factory mount? I realize a 4 stroke 9.9 would weigh more than a 2 stroke and at this point I'm not sure which I would go with. Thanks for you ideas. Dave Laing

Had one on mine

I had a Honda 9.9 4 stroke on my 1992 23.5 and I had to replace the standard fiberglass bracket that came with the boat as it was breaking off. I had to unbolt and chisile off the old U shaped bracket and replace it with a standard off the shelf Engine bracket. Hand no problems after that.

H23 Motor Mount

I have a Nissan 5hp on my boat, and plan to replace the fiberglass mount as it bends while motoring. I got worried and tied a line from the motor to the aft cleat, just in case. I am looking at one of the aftermarket alum mounts from WM. I would like to be able to raise and lower the motor for conditions too. Scott

Replace it soon

Scott, Mine was also bending quite a bit and did not want to risk losing the engine. Also with the bendint the angle of the moter was incorrect, instead of pushing the boat forward it was trying to lift the stern and drive the bow down, so movement forward was horrible.

overkill?

Sounds like too much motor anyway. Hunter recommends the 5HP given the limited hull speed. I have a Honday 5 horse 4 stroke and it's plenty of power(without currents). I wouldn't trust any more weight on the factory bracket.

H25 9.9 Johnson on spring mount just perfect!

I have a Johnson 9.9 mounted to a West Marine heavy duty spring mount on the back of my H25. It works great and isn't overpowered ever. I run on SF Bay and when the swells are high, it comes through like a champ. Funny thing though, she almost planes out on flat water! It works very well and I wouldn't consider any less hp -- especially on unpredictable water. Enjoy! sv Ms. Toad's Wild Ride

never enough power!

There is no such thing as too much power! First, the bigger motor will not have to work as hard. Its not good to run at full or almost full throttle, especially for long time. Second, if you have to motor into strong winds and waves, 5 hp IS NOT ENOUGH!. I have a 4 hp, and I've been in situations where motoring into the wind (no waves, protected waters) I would only make about 3.5-3.8 knots. Add some waves and maybe stronger winds and you are litterally pissing in the wind! 9.9 or better yet 15 hp (same weight) is what I would have on the transom if I had the money right now. Also, I have the original bracket, but the previous owner has installed a SS support under the existing fiberglass bracket. I can STAND on my outboard bracket and it doesn't even flex! It looks pretty simple to make with a little SS angle stock. Take Care, Chris
