never enough power!
There is no such thing as too much power! First, the bigger motor will not have to work as hard. Its not good to run at full or almost full throttle, especially for long time. Second, if you have to motor into strong winds and waves, 5 hp IS NOT ENOUGH!. I have a 4 hp, and I've been in situations where motoring into the wind (no waves, protected waters) I would only make about 3.5-3.8 knots. Add some waves and maybe stronger winds and you are litterally pissing in the wind! 9.9 or better yet 15 hp (same weight) is what I would have on the transom if I had the money right now. Also, I have the original bracket, but the previous owner has installed a SS support under the existing fiberglass bracket. I can STAND on my outboard bracket and it doesn't even flex! It looks pretty simple to make with a little SS angle stock.Take Care,Chris
