Oday 222 Bellport
Just finished my first season w an Oday 222. Tons of fun but I had troubles w the old 8 hp motor. Any suggestion on what to buy for a new motor? Maybe a 4 hp?

Stick with at least 8 HP. PO of mine had a 4 HP and really complained about the lack of power. 8 is about perfect in that you can back off the throttle and it still moves quite smartly along, but quieter.

If you have an old Johnson 8 hp long shaft two stroke with the shift on the front of the engine, I'd get it fixed and stick with it. An 8 hp is a good size for this boat. I sunk over $800 in my 1999 Johnson 8 this past season and I'd do it again. Find a good mechanic. I took my outboard to the dealer whom I purchased it from new and they took me for almost $400. My engine came back running worse than when I brought it to them. After asking around, I found an ace mechanic who was able to get it back to where it was when it was running great. It needed a lot of work but I was willing to pay the price because I loved that engine. Besides, I don't care much for four strokes.

What kind of problem are you having??

An 8 HP sailmaster is a darn good motor and well worth fixing, or replacing with another good used one. In the late 80's they began using a fuel enricher that operates as a choke, rather than a real choke. Why I have no clue, but it operates by putting extra fuel into the engine. The o rings inside them fail and they will leak internally, making the motor run very rich, smoke, no power. Also, the fuel pumps on outboards dont last so long, and not long at all depending on your regional/local fuel formula. A weak pump, coupled with a leaking enricher can make the engine almost inoperable. The parts to spiff it back up are less than $30 and are quite easy for a DIY to replace.

In addition, carbs can get clogged passageways and cause poor idle, no idle, hard starting, wont start, etc.. Again, quite simple, parts are cheap. Disassembly and flushing with a blast of carb cleaner will usually correct them with no parts required.

Any chance you know a good mechanic on Long Island?
I wish I'd have inquired about a good mechanic with some of my friends before I took my engine to the dealer whom I had originally bought it through when it was new. They got me for almost $400.
The motor came back running horrible. After that, I took it to a good mechanic and he fixed it. It had a water intake problem. He had to pull the power head off and replace the intake pipe. A lot of other stuff needed attention.
Make sure you find a good mechanic you can trust.
