I am trying to buy my sister a new outboard motor for her Catalina 27 as a gift. The four stroke motors are 128-133 lbs and available in 20" and 25". The 2 stroke motors are only 78 lbs and again available in 20" & 25". I have access to the Mercury line and for various reasons, I would prefer to buy the Mercury product. Please, what experienced advice is out there to arrive at the best motor for her? The difference in cost is not a serious consideration. I am just trying to buy the right motor for her. Are the additional features of the 4 stroke enough to compensate for the additional weight? What is the right length? Thank you for your help and input.

In my humble opinion: DEFINITELY get the long shaft and DEFINITELY get the four-stroke. The long shaft is important to minimize the instances of the prop coming out of the water when the stern raises up in wakes or waves. The four-stroke is more fuel efficient, quieter, more environmentally friendly (smokes less), and the additional weight isn't an issue. I've got an 8hp four-stroke on my 25 Catalina. Of course, another important consideration is whether the boat already has a motor mount/lift or will a new one be needed for the new outboard? I have the same problem and I am guessing that your 4 stroke won't fit in the well but requires a mount, right? What is the mount, a bracket on the back off to the side?

Mine's a Garhauer
Mine is a Garhauer lift up bracket mounted on the starboard stern, as shown at the attached link. I've read opinions elsewhere that a Catalina 25 will not sail well (or as well) with a port-mounted outboard but don't know if that also applies to 27 footers. Steve
