I had one
I had a 16.5 and I put an electric trolling motor on the motor mount. Put the battery in the the cutty and ran cable under the port seat and drilled 2 holes in the access hatch. Added 2 posts with wing nuts and attached the 2 cables from the motor and away we went. Don't forget to put the battery in a battery box.
In my opinion, this was a better way than a gas motor. It was quiter, cleaner and less hasle. Good luck

I'd think you could get away with the short shaft but don't hold me to that as I don't have the stock motor mount. Mine's a custom one the previous owner either made or had made. A 2hp outboard should make it fly across the water.
FWIW, I went with the trolling motor too, though I mounted my battery in the stern. I was going to move the battery forward to the cuddy this winter (for better balance) but it's up for sale as we just bought a 2000 Catalina Capri 22.
