could someone tell me the largest outboard I can put on our 1978 Hunter 25 Cherubini? I have heard 9.8. Is it possible to use a 15hp or 25hp?
Thanks!

Bigger is not always better .... (my inner 13 year-old is trying to say something)

But trying to be serious... a displacement hull has a maximum speed that is 1.34 times the square of your water-line length. With your water line length of 20' your max hull speed is 6 kts.

So you need an O.B. that can push you at 6 kts at about 3/4 throttle. You want a little reserve for when you are pushing into a headwind. But there are serious down sides to hanging too much weight on the back of your transom. My recommendation is to get a smaller O.B. with a high thrust prop and a lower gear ratio.

I have a Tohatsu 6 on my Hunter 26 and I get hull speed at just a little over half throttle.

What rgranger said. 9.8 HP will get you to hull speed and power you successfully through waves if needed.

Going to higher power would also require thought about strengthening the motor mount/hull. And there will be no payoff in performance.

9.8 hp is max as the transom was designed for a max power of 10 hp. Period!!!!

The owner of Hunter who was very much involved in the design of Cherubini designed 25 sailboat along with the buyer of the first hunter which was the 25 who later became a sailboat dealer confirmed what I said in the first paragraph. They were my friends

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the feedback. I have decided on a Tohatsu 9.8.
