We own a 1979 oday 28 with a ysm 8 yanmar diesel. We experienced a situation this weekend where the motor died and within 3 seconds the electrical panel died (all power). After some investigating, we finally removed the 20 watt fuse that is mounted on the motor, inspected it (it looked OK) clipped it back in and all the power was restored. However, when we attempted to start the motor again, the power died again. We replaced the fuse but did not work. Has anyone experienced this type of situation with their oday?:neutral: Our next step was to perhaps clean this fuse box and connection with some contact cleaner. Any ideas?

We think so...but it is hard to determine where. It seems that it would have to be in that 20amp fuse holder since when we plugged the fuse back in the lights came back on. However, the puzzling thing is that when we pushed the starter button to crank the engine it went out again. The good thing that we eventually found out is that the yanmar ysm will run solo without any electrical power. Hand crank and you just need fuel.
Look at the starter and alternator cause thats where the main feed starts and then it feeds the boat fuse panel or thats where the wiring on my 78 Oday is set up, also check the ground at the engine cause that could be the problem too!

Corrosion is common issue in boats. Small brass wire brush, fine emory paper, contact cleaner, very small mill file, elbow grease all necessary on all connections. May be more than one connection, so clean all.
check springs in fuse holer to insure they are tight and not corroded at points of contact.
after it dies, check for continuity with multimeter. You might need some very long jumper clips to do that.

We feel like we have something shorting out because all power goes out. The engine ground sounds like a possibilty and we have not checked. Dumb question...where would the engine ground be? and what would it look like. Do you have a Yanmar YSM8?

Follow the big black wire from the battery or battery selector switch to where it attaches to the engine. That should be it.

Hey all...thanks so much for the input. It is nice to know there are folks out there willing to share there knowledge and experiences. Just want to update and let all know that the problem was the ground cable was not tight enough on the battery terminal. It did not appear loose and we really would not have considered this had someone not mentioned "ground"...so thanks again. Everything was fine and along came a blackout.
