Garelick motor bracket will not stay in "up" position when sailing with 5 hp - must be worn out after 28 yrs. Garelick does not make that bracket anymore or have parts. Cannot remove bracket because I cannot get to the bolts & nuts, either thru the inspection port in transom or lazarette locker. Must have been factory installed. What do I do? Any ideas welcome. Thanks.

cut an access port in transom cockpit

If you search this site, there is much written about this, including a picture of a deckplate mounted in the stern cabin that will allow access to the transom for motor mount. Good Luck.

are the springs worn out?

i had some broken springs on my bracket which made it hard to lift. the manufacturer would do nothing for me. i ended up taking a spring out (easily done) and over nighting it to Gardner Springs in Tulsa OK. They made me new springs and I had them in less than a week. I had a half dozen made and it cost me about 100 bucks, cheaper and easier than replacing the motor mount.

Check the Notch

It may be that the slight notch in the lever used to raise the engine is worn. This would allow the engine to fall or not stay in the upright position. Compare the notch of the full up position to the others. If it is worn badly you may be able to dress it with a file to restore the notch face. Not much cost.

Shine On!
