Motor and prop stuff:

Well listening to you guys I think I should have Steve set me up with the complete package. I have the worst luck with anything rebuilt though, but maybe Steve has shinning new stuff. I know an outboard is not going to happen, so that leave me with going complete inboard. The boat has nothing in it and that’s the way I bought it. Thought I would make my own heartaches.

Larry,

Probably the smartest thing you could do. I bought a complete package from
Steve including a coupler and even the steel for making the engine mounting
plate adapters. I am not a pro mechanic, but was able to complete a great
installation without any headaches (except for the normal bumping my head
that I always seen to do). I think the hardest part was cleaning the oil
that coated the engine room bilge and painting it.

Wholeheartedly agree with Chris's sentiments. Get Steve Birch "on board" and fit a new Beta complete with all the gubbins. I messed about refurbishing an MD6 and combi system and it was nothing but trouble. It was not surprising really as it was nearly 40 years old and although a basically sound "engine" all of the peripherals were past their best. I spent most of my time, on a trip from the UK to the Canary Islands, getting it repaired. It was a major contributory factor to my selling the boat and returning to the UK. I continued the trip to the Caribbean on a Vancouver 27 (with a newish engine) and it was such a delight to just turn the key and listen to it purr away. Confidence in your engine was more important than I ever thought it would be!
I believe the new owner has fitted a Beta now - I wish I had done it myself before setting off - it would have been cheaper than paying for the constant repair work - no to mention the grief!
