My Capri 22, "Aja" (pronounced like the continent, album, song, and my daughter's middle name; yes, a fan of the Dan) on Lake Monroe at the Mother's Arms Challenge, a typically grueling endeavor consisting this year of a barrel race, then the lap around the Arms.

We were done when we so-called fouled and grudgingly compromised, taking half a penalty (a 360) at the start, finishing 8th out of 10. Remarkably, the times corrected out super close, the winning Flying Scott correcting out 15 seconds ahead of the Precision 23. With a super sweet, little English, mostly Spanish speaking married couple crew picked up at the ramp; (he'd sailed before on a J24 in PR, she'd never been), we were a couple minutes (or about 1 @ 360!) behind the Farrier Tramp which rates almost identically. I GOTTA get that spinnaker rigged!

Great time and super challenging... Pencil us in for next year folks! ;-)

Nothing like a bit of wind across smooth waters!

That's a Catalina 22 Sport, essentially a Catalina 22 hull and sail plan with a Capri 22 top and interior. That particular one is rally nice and goes very well. We beat him boat for boat but he corrected out and got us. Can't wait for my 155 and spin set up! ;-)

Do you have a wing keel or is Lake Monroe deep enough for a fin?

I haven't sailed on Lake Monroe but I've been in the neighborhood. My grandparents live in Deltona which isn't too far north.

Wow yeah the "sport" does have inklings of being a Cat 22 eh?
Sailno 29? Looks like he could use a deck sweeper, that cut was way off the deck (might be the picture).

That run up the "fingers" would drive me insane. I bet it's quite shallow too, yep, leave me out, well leave me out in light air anyway.

You rate the same as a tri-maran? Really? My only rubs with those were like with the corsair... and that thing is greased lightning... dude showed up to one of our races, mainsail alone, and he was moving at double to triple our speed the whole time.... we calculated that he'd have had to complete our course in 20 minutes to place, took the rest of us about 1:30.

Sail #29 has a note with the picture of the Non-deck sweeping jib that mentions it is a San Juan 21 jib. Hence the high cut!

Yeah, that's actually a genny for a SJ 21 on my boat (main sail bought from a friend who's hull IS 29) and the SJ jib works quite well; see the quick comparison I did before trying the SJ sail attached. In a breeze with the wing keel, I think the slot at the top actually may help, keeping the power a bit lower. I kept it high that day knowing I'd do a million tacks (underestimated that one), there was light air and thinking it might increase efficiency. There are also a ton of used SJ 135 racing sails around by comparison... just sayin'.

Lake Monroe can get pretty shallow at certain times of year, but I've never had an issue with the wing. Ask a few questions at the ramp or get in touch with anyone at LMSA a day ahead of time and you should be fine as the shallow spots are well known. If you live nearby and want a ride, just get in touch and we'll make it happen. We are a very receptive club and with me or someone else, you'll typically get on a boat, certainly at any of our casual booze runs... of which there are many. ;-)

The Tramp is not too fast. Beefy, grossly underpowered and while very cool and fun, the Capri can be comfortably competitive. Hell, over the 3+ hour Challenge, he beat me by about a minute and a half (3 minutes on the water) after my 360 "penalty" at the start, him flying a chute (super valuable that day) and me with an SJ21 jib, no spinnaker and non/little-english speaking crew I picked up at the ramp. Of course the same guy has an F-31 ... different story. That's me staring up, also on Lake Monroe. I knew she has some yards of sail, but the first time seeing this photo, my jaw dropped... ;-)
