Remember going past mothball yard south of San Diego years ago and seeing the Exxon Valdeez under repair. Nearby was the USS Long Beach getting ready for dismantling. Many old ships go to India where they are run up on the beach at high tide and dismantled under appalling conditions.

Exxon Valdez

A few years after the fateful impact with the rock I bought a bunch of Alaska charts from a guy who was crewing on the supertanker at the time the Exxon Valdez hit it the rock.

Needless to say I had a very interesting and very long discussion with him about what happened. Very, very interesting.

I have to say I love seeing the insides of derelict old buildings and ships like this. Something really cool about seeing something that was once new and grand and how it is aging without any human intervention. Would love to see more pictures of these ghost fleets.
Yes! Love this stuff. Would love to have a chance to explore them all. So many stories to tell...

Thought you guys might enjoy me telling you about my ship that escaped being scrapped. I served on the USS Kidd DD661 during the Quemoi-Matsu chrisis in the Taiwan straits in 1958. (I served 10 yrs Navy and 11 Army) I walked her decks again in 2006! She is one of 3 old Fletcher class destroyers saved as museums and now floating at Baton Rouge in the Mississippi River.
Go see her if you are down that way and give her a fond pat for me. Its special to me to know she didn't get scrapped! Who has got to go see her?
