Michelle

My parents just bought a Hunter 23 (1986). Looking to help them outfit the boat with some xmas presents. They are old salts, but haven't owned a vessel for quite some time, so we're starting over. What would be your top 10 most wanted "fun" or practical items. Any specifics, like what size cooler fits best, cool galley gadgets or recommendations on a good marine gps would be greatly appreciated. They will be sailing in the area of Cape May, NJ. Thanks!

Depends on your budget...

A few things an older Hunter 23 might need: Sail cover? tiller cover? tiller tamer? fenders? Dock lines? Anchor & rode? Furling unit for headsail? Outboard engine? Adjustable motor bracket? Depth finder? Compass? Binoculars? Battery? New halyards? New sheets for the main and jib?

I Would Think That...

...you should get safety and navigation equipment, first. Those are the things that would hold many sailors back because they help the most. My greatest thing is a GPS Chartplotter. That is followed by an Autohelm which will lead to less fatigue for the helmsman. Then followed by charts, dividers for manual plotting, h/h compass, VHF radio, binoculars,...and the list goes on (see the other posts)!

Hand Held Chartplotter, definately

Mac said seats, MOST definately, especially for the older couple. That and the H23 can mount about three swivel cannons...

Cockpit Seats...

...mentioned here are available at WM. There are 2 kinds. This site's Chandlery also list them as "Sport-a-Seat". Those listed here are better quality here than at WM, though!

You've already given

Since you have already thought about helping your parents refit the boat, you must be a swell daughter and no doubt you have given them a lifetime of memories! Give them some more by going sailing with them! You sound like a poster child for the family sailing edition of U.S. Sailing! Or are you missleading us all and trying to be adopted! ha,ha. Actually, I highly recommend this site for your shopping. Have a Merry Sailing Christmas
