Mosquito Netting

In another thread that I had started, conversation turned to netting used to ward off mosquitoes and other critters. Leeward Rail "hinted" that a separate thread be started to discuss methods used to address this issue.

We have used netting I mentioned in another thread that we purchased from Joann Fabric for the last three overnight weekends. This netting has eliminated our(Texas) mosquito problem! The cost was 3.99 yd. but I had a 50% coupon! 5 yards will cover the front hatch and the companionway with pop top up.

Please share what has worked for you...try to include such info as price, color, quality, where purchased and how much (price).

I need some of that to install over the louvers on my top crib board. Dang mud daubers get in and build nests. I cleaned out 5 of them yesterday.

Thanks for the info on the skeeter netting, I'll have to look for some of that next time I go into the big town. I think the mosquito was 2nd runner up for state bird here a couple of years ago. I've been thinking seriously about constructing/sewing a whole new pop top cover out of netting with some cloth reinforcement for better ventilation when staying aboard. Kito, I also bought a floating dirt dauber condo and 3 years later, I'm still cleaning up after them. I actually used aluminum window screen on the inside of louvered crib board to keep them out, it's gotten better, but then still always find a way to get in......

I made a spare crib board, cut out the middle and screened it. But it's not really for cruising, it's more for ventilation when the boat is covered and not in use:

I also bought one of these forward hatch screens http://shop.catalinaowners.com/prod.php?54147, but the suction cups which make the whole system work would not stay stuck to the Lexan hatch. So I discarded the suction cups and the strings, and I'm currently in the process of adding several little attachment points from self adhesive Velcro, about eight points in all, each being roughly .5" x .75". The screen will then attach to the cabin ceiling, covering the hatch opening fairly tightly. What I'm doing with this could be done with any ordinary piece of screen, I suspect.

In the camping section of many major department or hardware store's sporting goods departments you will find mosquito netting that has elastic sewn into it; it is intended for use to cover the top of a baby carriage. The elastic makes it easy to stretch out over the companionway and the forward hatch. They cost about $4. I've used them for years. (essentially the same fabric mentioned above, but the sewn i elastic makes it convenient.)
