Morse Throttle/Transmission Control

The throttle control on my 376 (1998) is quite difficult to change from F to R and back, especially when manuvering in tight places and I need to make "k" type turns. Is this a lubrication issue or possibly time for a a new cable, or maybe linkage?

Try lube first!

Bob: I would try lubrication first. Lithium grease is excellent for this purpose. If you can remove the cable from the housing you can inspect it for any wear spots or abrasion. You may find that you have a little corrosion on the cable which can be cleaned up with a little emory paper. The lithium grease is aerosol and should have a snorkle on the can, this makes it easy to spray down the housing.

We Replaced Ours

Hi Bob, You're in a great sailing town. I replaced our throttle and shift cables. While we had the pedistal open, we added a GPS data/power cable and a VHF RAM mic cable as well. Is it possible that your cable is kinked some place? It makes many turns as it snakes between the top of the pedestal and the throttle linkage on the diesel. Just find it's path where you can see it, and look for kinks. The throttle lnkage on the diesel is far easier to deal with than the shift linkage, so you're lucky that it is the throttle that is giving you problems. I would suggest that you nail down the exact model of the pedestal you have and get the parts breakdown drawings and installation guide for it. There may be cable clamps inside the pedestal that you can drop inside the pedestal if you loosen them too much. The drawings and instructions will show you what's inside there. Probably you have an Edson and they may have on-line drawings, or they will send you whatever you need. Let me know if you need help. Could just be the make of tranny

Has shifting always been tough? If so, it might be the type of transmission that you have. I have a '93 37.5 and shifting is real tough. I am told by Mack Boring and Edson that the type transmission that I have (KBW-10) is known to be hard to shift. In fact, Edson's new single shift/throttle control cannot be used on this transmission because it's so hard to shift. Edson suggested a super high grade of shift cable that I may try. Otherwise I've been told to live with it. I agree that it makes maneuvering very difficult in tight places. I will be interested to hear if you find other solutions.

Edson Cables

I had to replace my throttle and transmission cables a few years back. Tried the Morse Red dogs and they are not the item to use. Measure the exact length you need and call Edson for a price quote. Edson has a super glide cable for use with their pedistals. Regardless of the price - get the Edson cables. They are super. As to lubrication, these cables are sealed at each end and almost mpossible to open. I had the exact same hard to move problem with the Morse cables. Edson solved the proble - big time. Mine Too - but overcome

Bob, I had an early 376 in May 96 and the gear shift was impossible to live with. As the design was very new I looked at the cable run and concluded that it would be better if the cable ran along the Stbd side of the engine at low level near to the oil filter and then arched upwards and back to the gearbox. Fortunately the cable length was okay and it has been that way ever since. I have never needed to adjust it or lubricate it since. I did pass this info back to Hunter and received an assurance that all later boats would be modified. It does make access to the oil filter slightly more difficult in that it is necessary to pull the cable to one side to gain access. This is a very small price to pay for a silk smooth gear shift. Have a look at yours to see how the cable(s) run in the engine bay. Regards, Don.

376 Shifter

I have a 97 376. My shifting became difficult just as you describe. I greased the cable at the shifter on the transmission and that helped a little bit (use lithium). I asked my mechanic and he suggested we change the transmission fluid. Apparently there's a centrifugal type clutch of some sort in these transmissions that tends to bind a bit when the fluid needs changing. Sounded a bit odd to me but guess what...worked and works like a charm. Certainly worth a try before you try to change out the cable.
