Anyone have any suggestions for a former trailer-sailer that cannot find a place to put his newly purchased fixed-keel boat. I live in Plymouth, Mass. and am willing to travel 40-50 miles N-S or W to place my vessel, Plymouth isn't available for 7 years and Sandwich won't be for 15 years. I believe I'll eating the "early bird" dinner specials in Florida and going to bed at 8:00 by that time. Any advice appreciated. Mark

It's a real problem, Mark. I went up the coast from Boston and put my name on every waiting list most of the way to Portland! the best bet is to talk to the locals, try to get to know the local harbormaster, maybe you'll get lucky! My marina, Hawthorne Cove in Salem, MA, usually has some moorings available, and it's a great location, but that's a real haul for you. good luck!

Mark, you might try Hewitts Cove in Hingham. they had 5 or so empty moorings last year, and I just got my own mooring this year so at least one mooring has turned over. I beleive they have a waiting list for slips. 781-749-6647. not much of a hike for you either. Bryce S/V Spellbinder H410

In Onset, at the head of Buzzard's Bay and at the West end of the Cape Cod Canal is Point Independence YC (508-295-3972). They may have moorings for seasonal rent. Also there is Onset Bay Marina (508-295-0338) - give them a try. If you have a good cruising guide, refer to that for locations and phone numbers. The coast near you is a bit limited, but the west/north side of Buzzards Bay is plentiful with locations. I often recommend Maptech Embassy Cruising Guides. The one that covers our area is the RI, MA & NH issue which covers Block Island to Kittery, ME.

If I lived up there I'd look around for a place that might let me sink my own mooring. They might be more interested in your rent fee if they didn't have to do anything. Look for someone with a summer home in a cove. Just an idea. I bought my 45' slip here in the Houston area for $16,500 three years ago. 45 footers are selling for $21000 in the same marina today. I think the writing is on the wall.... Ron
