Most of the suggestions for replacment/cleaning of the elbow use time as the determining factor. What about use or engine hours? I only put 60-70 hours per year on the engine. Thanks. Bob.

may depend on your engine

Like you I only put on limited hours a year. I have an older 2qm15, which is original on a 1980 Hunter 33' purchased four years ago. This winter was the first time I had the mixing elbow off. After taking it off, I hammered the rust around the end of the elbow attached to the exhaust hose to enable fitting on a new hose. Other than that, the elbow was almost clean inside. I cleaned it as best I could at deckside and reinstalled it. I would recommend taking yours off for an inspection. Then, you will know what you have rather than guess.

Exhaust water

You should be getting a good strong gush of water out of the exhaust every few seconds. if not the cost to replace the elbow is far less then a new engine.

Here's the key

Try to run the engine at its sweet spot as much as possible, and preferably 2 hours a month to blow it out. The mistake people make is to run the thing slow, thinking they're saving the engine. In fact, they're clogging it.
