hust like my previous quetstion on tacking with a traveler, maybe there's an answer to this or maybe not. my boat has a straight track garhauer; is there some proper operating procedure for setting it?

Mortyd: Yup, there sure is a simple 7 step proceedure to properly set the traveler and the ease of operation of you Garhauer traveler makes the adjustment very easy to do. Go to page 2 of your Sail Trim Chart (traveler adjustment) or page 24 of your Sail Trim Users Guide. Mortyd - what, you say you don't have the book or chart? See all the sail trim info your missing!! don, i'm delighted with both, and obviously not the world's best reader, since i had no idea the instructions were quite so specific.
don, i'm a better reader than i thought. i had read and digested that part of your book, but what i meant in my too vague question was the actual operation of the traveler lines themselves, in what order and when. thanks.

Mortyd: Thank you for buying my stuff!! OK, now I get the question. I have both my traveler lines led back to the helm (so I don't disturb my wife from reading and getting rays!!) so it is easy for me to PLAY the traveler especially one as powerful as the Garhauer. With the Garhauer, it is so powerful that I release both sides at the same time and I play the traveler like a fiddle. With the flip of my wrists it is lose and I just move it to the position I want and it does not matter how much pressure is on it. I'm trying to think of a situation where I would relase only one side but I can't think of any. Maybe another lister can suggest a sition where only one line would be released.

Don, in responce to your question: "Maybe another lister can suggest a sition where only one line would be released." We never lock the leeward traveler control line until it's time to tack. On a beat, locking the leeward control line means every adjustment requires 2 extra movements for no possible gain.

don, either you are much stronger than me, have a different garhuaer, both, or my traveler is not rigged correctly. it has double sheaves and is reasanble, but far from easy, to play with. i'm the second owner and the po didn't even have it rigged double around the blocks. that was a real bear.

Not counting the last leg of the control line, how many legs are there? If you have double sheeves at both ends of the control line then your MA (mechanical advantage) should be 4:1. This means that a 50lb pull exerts 200lbs on the traveler. That should be plenty of leverage to do the job.
