We've finally bit the bullet and purchased a cruising spinnaker (from HOW of course). I've searched the archives and can't seem to find any notes on how high above the forestay the spinnaker halyard should be. I think the huy at West Marine told me just go "about 1 foot higher" but this sounds kinda vague. I've got a Schaefer Snapfurl so the jib halyard is still used, I've already purchased the line, spliced on a shackle (what a pain splicing is) and have all the other necessary pieces/parts. So, for the H26 how long should the tack line be (5 feet as per the "what you need to fly a spinnaker" section)? Once that's calculated do you just measure the spinnaker in the sock to determine where you hit the mast above the forestay or what? Thanks, Jim

Spin questions

The spin halyard should be high enough over the jib sheeve to avoid tangling and to give you higher reach. But that assumes a fractional rig in which you have a few feet above the spin to work with. If not, just use an alternatve sheeve on top of the mast. If you're interest later in a cheap, effective bowsprit to throw the spin out another four feet and away from the mainsail blanketing, email me your ground mail address and I'll send you pix and directions. You'll find lots of postings in the Archives of this website about spinnaker sailing. It's the berries.

Bill, can you post the picture?

If not, could you describe your "bowsprit"? I also just bought an assymetric spinnaker for our H260.
