Space Planning
Hi Sailing PastorI am 6'-4" on good days and sail a 22 O'Day. The forward vee berths have 4 cushions:(2) vee shaped triangular forward cushions, and(2) extender cushions that go all the way to the bulkhead. They cover the porta potty and floor space. The extender cushions to make the entire forward compartment a huge vee berth. That should make for a berth around 6 feet and change in length.I leave the extender cushion over the porta-potty to create a long portside berth. On the starboard side, I left the extender cushion out to provide access to the forward compartment through the "doorway".But a few critical thoughts:We have 22 foot trailer sailers, and if you're over 6 feet in height, you're going to be cramped in that boat no matter what. The bulkhead that you're thinking of cutting into is not only part of the mast support structure, but also distributes the shroud deck plate loads to the hull. Weakening that area by removal of plywood might also weaken the stays holding up the mast.I never had trouble sleeping up forward on the 22, although I cannot say that I can completely "stretch" out up in there, it is still fairly roomy. If only I didn't have to crawl about in there on my knees because of the low headroom!Good Luck Sir!Stu "Karakahl"1979 O'Day 22 CBCenterport, NY
