I generally work alone so those bolts are a hassle. I cannot worry about the bolt turning and ruining any sealant. I connect visegrips to the nut and then go topsides to turn the bolt with visegrips attached to a large philips screwdriver. With a bolt every six inches it is quite an exercise. Anyone considered doubling up with a locknut maybe every second or third bolt?

I guess I should have done the bow when I was doing my hawse pipe. I had the v-berth cabinet and bulkhead out at the time. Don't know how else you could get in there.

The bolts on the rail are between the anchor locker and the hull on the 1984 model also. its a bugger but they can be tightned from the inside with a long extension. by cutting an access hole under the nav station bolts can be reached with a long set of extensions and universal joints. by making the whole large enough you can also get some storage there. but some of us have run ac thru there so it is pretty tough to get room.

you can also remove the lower shelf in the aft cabin cabinet and reach the ones there.

I removed my starbord toe rail to repair it and found the original grey caulking still in a liquid state after 30 years. Granted it was a 95 degree July day. I found the original caulk got on every deck surface, hands and clothes it got near to. I had to use a putty knife to remove it all from the toe rail before I did some welding repairs. I used a non hardening polysulfide caullk to rebed it with. That was a lot of screws to tighthen.

You guys amaze me! Not only is it almost impossible to get to the toerail bolts but how do you have the time? I would have to live on my boat for a week to get the toerail off. The stanchions alone would probably take three days. Maybe I am missing the magic tools.

That's riight Bill. I remember now that when the light hits the deck just right that you can see the plywood coring. This is exactly how Ed A. and someone else described the build, squares not necessarily glassed tightly together.

My 1969 Morgan 34 had similar patterns in the glass and I have seen Irwin 37/38's with glass weave showing thru the gel coat.

I always used to think fiberglass took a "permanent" shape. Guess time ages resin also.

My 1980 Cherubini Hunter 36 also has the squares impressions showing through, but on the cabin sides where the smooth gelcoat had weathered in spots so that the underlying resin was beginning to show. It's repainted with 2-part polyurethane now. Also when I repaired the cockpit sole under/around the pedestal, I found the plywood squares.
